Navigate to the directory that you have WordPress installed in. Open up the wp-includes folder and inside you will find quite a large list of files. We are going to be modifying the formatting.php file so go ahead and find that and open it. If you are using a program that displays the line number for the code you are going to want to make your way down to line 856. For those of you that may not have a program that shows the line number for code you can most likely find a search feature for the opened file, usually under the Edit, Search or Tools file menu. Make a search for $excerpt_length = 55;, this will take you to the right line of code that we are going to be modifying.
